An ergonomic child computer chair is essential for fostering good posture

Good habits start early in life. A child computer chair helps foster and develop a good seating posture for your child which hopefully will carry over to their adult life.

A good child computer chair should be height adjustable with comfortable back and seat support and have a five caster pedestal for best stability. It should also be an adequate size - neither too big or small.  Keep it simple. A basic ergonomic chair that's functional works just fine.

A child computer chair is only one component of a child's work space at home. There are other equally important considerations to consider as outlined below:

  1. Is there adequate lighting for the work area?  Fluorescent lighting is relatively inexpensive and can be added either to the workspace through pedestal type lamps or can be attached to the work area itself depending on the configuration of the work area or desk.

  2. Check the fit of the keyboard and mouse to the size of your child's hand. You may want to consider a smaller keyboard and/or mouse for your child. Believe me they'll appreciate it.

  3. Is the computer screen glare free? If not you may want to reposition the computer screen or lighting (if possible) to eliminate glare spots which makes it uncomfortable and hard to concentrate.

  4. Make sure the work surface or desk is stable and that the keyboard is positioned to reduce stress to the wrists.

  5. Manage computer use. Children will often become possessed when using their computers. As with every aspect of our lives moderation is the key to any activity we undertake. The time spent in our chairs in front of the computer is no exception.
